Dr. Geoffrey M. Habermacher completed his internship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois where he also completed his Urology residency. He completed medical school at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received both his M.D. and his Ph.D. at Emory. He is board certified with the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Habermacher received several honors during his education to include the Leander W. Riba Urology Award for Outstanding Performance, Empathy, and Skill, the Charles Huggins Award for Urologic Research and the Joseph B. Whitehead Scholarship in Surgery.

Dr. Habermacher’s practice consists of general urology with a special interest in prostate cancer, renal cancer and laparoscopy. Other interests include fishing and military history.

Dr. Joseph F. Pazona is the Chief of Urology at the UAB Multispecialty Clinic and Director of Robotic Surgical Services at Baptist Medical Center South. He received his Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Pazona continued his education at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois where he received his medical degree. Dr. Pazona remained at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago where he would complete his residency. During his education, Dr. Pazona received numerous awards including the Vincent J. O’Connor, Sr. Award for Excellence in Teaching of Medical Students. He became a Robotic Surgery Proctor in 2011, and is board-certified by the American Urological Association. After 8 years in a successful clinical practice in Washington State, Dr. Pazona was asked to lead the UAB Urology service and build the Robotic Surgical Services program at Baptist Medical Center South. He has successfully performed over 200 robotic urologic surgeries. As a former Eagle Scout, he further refined his leadership skills as Chief-of-Staff at Wenatchee Valley Hospital in Washington State. Dr. Pazona’s clinical interests include: minimally invasive treatments of prostate/kidney/bladder cancer, kidney stones, female incontinence, male urinary dysfunction, pediatric urology and no-needle/no-scalpel vasectomy.

Dr. Pazona enjoys traveling with his family, running, camping, cooking and baseball.

Carlos Gadea, M.D.

Carlos Gadea, M.D.

Dr. Carlos Gadea received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences degree from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. He received his medical degree from the Escuela Autonoma de Ciencias Medicas de Centro America. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut, Farmington and fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky. He is board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is also a member of the American College of Rheumatology.

Dr. Gadea is married to fellow physician Dr. Ximena Ruiz and they have one son and one daughter. In their spare time, they enjoy trying new restaurants, spending time outdoors and shopping.

Dr. Matthew B. Mullen graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville majoring in chemistry. Dr. Mullen’s medical education began at the University of South Florida College Of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is board-certified in internal medicine and a member of the American College of Physicians as well as the American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Mullen received several awards during his education including Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the Tinsley Harrison Achievement Award, which is awarded to third year internal medicine residents for outstanding performance on general medicine wards.

In his free time, Dr. Mullen enjoys hiking, traveling, fishing, and watching college football. He also enjoys cooking and trying new restaurants.

Dr. Ximena D. Ruiz received her medical degree from the Universidad CES - School of Medicine, Medellin, Colombia. She completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut, Farmington and fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is board-certified in internal medicine and a member of the American College of Physicians as well as the American College of Rheumatology. She is also a member of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. Dr. Ruiz received several awards during her education including Veterans Administration Award for Excellence in geriatric patient care and teaching at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Nambron completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Gundersen Medical Foundation in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She completed her first year of clinical fellowship in Endocrinology at the University Hosptial Case Medical Center Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and her second year of fellowship in endocrinology at University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Nambron is a board certified internist in clinical metabolic disease and is board-certified by the American Boards of Endocrinology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Nambron received several awards during her education including the Resident Travel Grant Winner awarded by American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, as well as an award for the American College of Physicians Wisconsin Chapter Scientific Meeting. She also earned membership in the Royal College of Physicians in London, England.

Dr. Thudi received her medical degree from Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, Telangana, India. She completed a rotating internship at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Warangal, Telangana, India and completed her Internal Medicine residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center, Flint, MI. She completed her endocrinology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI.

She is a board-certified internal medicine physician. Dr. Thudi is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Physicians. She has special interests in thyroid disorders and thyroid biopsies.

Kertrisa McWhite, M.D.

Get to know Dr. McWhite

Dr. Kertrisa McWhite is a fellowship trained, board-certified surgical breast oncologist. She has over 13 years of experience providing a full range of surgical services to women battling breast cancer, along with high risk counseling services for women with a history of breast cancer in their families. She describes herself as a “fixer” and attributes her gravitation toward surgery to that characteristic. She likes surgery because it is technical, but she also enjoys the emotional support she can offer a patient undergoing a personal procedure like a mastectomy. Dr. McWhite offers a full range of surgical options to her patients in a sensitive, caring and reassuring manner.

Dr. McWhite is a southerner from New Albany, Georgia and is a Yale University graduate. She received her Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann School of Medicine, completed residency in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey and a fellowship in surgical breast oncology at Susan G. Komen/University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX, one of the most prestigious surgical breast oncology fellowship programs in the U.S.

Dr. McWhite will serve as a clinical assistant professor within the Division of Surgical Oncology at UAB and work collaboratively with her twenty specialty trained colleagues to provide patients with access to cutting edge medicine, research and clinical trials that have not been offered in our community previously. In addition, Dr. McWhite will participate in several departmental activities at UAB including tumor board, scholarly activities, grand rounds and interdisciplinary case review committees to ensure the care plan recommended for a patient is the best choice to treat her specific surgical and treatment need.

In her spare time, Dr. McWhite enjoys spending time with her family, reading and antiquing.

UAB Cardiothoracic Surgeon

John McKinney, Jr., F.A.C.S.

John McKinney, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. John McKinney studied chemistry at Miami University in Oxford, OH and The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, OH. He completed his general surgery residency at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. Following his general surgery training, Dr. McKinney completed his residency training in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Louisville, where he received advanced training in adult cardiac surgery and attained extensive experience in heart and lung transplantation, valve surgery and circulatory assist devices such as ventricular assist and the total artificial heart. Dr. McKinney also earned his Masters of Business Administration in Medical Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. His training accolades include the John W. Price Award for undergraduate instruction while at the University of Louisville and the Resident Research Award for his work at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. McKinney’s leadership experience includes serving as the Medical Staff President, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chairman of Critical Care during his career. He is board-certified by the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. McKinney holds memberships with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons and the American College of Physical Executives, and he is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

With nearly 25 years of experience, Dr. McKinney’s clinical interests include adult valve repair and replacement and completing the Carpentier Mitral Valve course, among other advanced courses. He has extensive experience with mitral and aortic diseases, including surgical repair of aortic dissection. He specializes in surgical techniques of the heart and lungs and performs cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures.

In his free time, Dr. McKinney likes to scuba dive and fly competitively as an aerobatic pilot.
